This scarf came about from a conversation in which a customer asked “what makes the Manos Rittenhouse so nice?” Jocelyn and I immediately starting throwing around words like “velvet,” “sproingy,”“squishy,” and least helpfully “so so nice,” but realized that nothing we could say could do justice to the feeling of the fabric.

I decided to grab a scarf book, whip up something cool, and give the store a good sample of the Rittenhouse. However, I rapidly found myself completely frustrated with the kinds of scarf patterns available in a number of books. A garter stitch scarf AND a garter stitch remnant scarf? A “quick to knit” scarf where every stitch is through the back loops? A stockinette scarf with pockets that are knit separately and sewed on at the end? No, no, no.

I decided to create a pattern that would be a simple combination of knits and purls in a pattern that looks far more complicated. Without fringe, it only uses one skein of Rittenhouse, so it’s a fabulous project to give the yarn a test drive. It also works for men, women, and children, and has fully adjustable sizing, so make it your own!
