This is such an individual pattern, no-one else will have one! With a popping colour and a neutral, or a pair of blues, your teen will be wearing this to the dinner table! (or to pizza on the sofa!)

A simple stretchy large rib creates a cosy band around the base of the hat, and means you can knit these for boys of various ages and still have them fit.
The intentional visible join in colours gives an extra touch and introduces the reverse stocking stitch that makes up the main hat.
The 18” size will fit a 10-year-old and he’ll have it for many years before needing the larger size as a replacement.

This is written for flat knitting (as it’s an ideal pattern for beginners), but can be altered easily to knit in the round.
