Braided little squares cowl
Create your own beautifully textured neck warmer featuring a continuous Celtic knot braid that runs all the way around, accented with small “dots” that can look like falling snow when worked in a lighter colour.
This cozy cowl is worked in the round, two colours are alternated, only one colour per row. The unused yarn is carried neatly up the back, reducing the number of ends to weave in. Each row is written out in full, and a clear chart (with “X” notation) is also included for those who prefer to work from charts.
Knowledge of basic stitches is assumed. The two special stitches used for overlay mosaic crochet are fully explained, with step-by-step instructions and helpful tutorial photos.
The pattern is rated Intermediate, but confident beginners with some experience are very welcome—I’m always available via messages if you need help or get stuck.
Yarn & Materials:
The samples shown are made using Stylecraft Highland Heathers (1 x 100 g in each colour), but any Double Knitting (DK) weight yarn will work.
The design looks great in solid colours or long-repeat self-striping yarns. Please note that short-repeat or variegated yarns (fair-isle prints, frequent colour changes, etc.) are not recommended.
Suggested hook: 4 mm (G/6)
Finished circumference: approx. 23.5 in / 59.5 cm
(Easily adjusted by altering the starting chain; the pattern repeats every 16 stitches.)
Finished depth: approx. 9 in / 23 cm
