Broadleaf Slouch is a brioche and stockinette hat designed to be cozy, stash friendly, and customizable. Available in two sizes with instructions for either a slouch or a beanie fit, it’s knit in the round holding mohair lace together with fingering (or sport) weight yarn for warmth and soft drape.

Choose two complementary colors from your stash to hold together for the stockinette body and the brioche background. A single strand of fingering or sport weight yarn is used for the brioche foreground so the motif stands out clearly.

Small yardage requirements make this a great stash project, and the pattern includes step by step video tutorials to guide you through the brioche.

Design Details

The brim features a bold brioche motif, while the body and crown are knit in easy stockinette so the texture remains the focus. The hat can be worked as a closer fitting beanie or a relaxed slouch.

You may substitute suri, brushed alpaca, or a DK weight yarn in place of mohair as long as you swatch and obtain gauge.

Pattern Highlights

  • Bold brioche brim that keeps the motif the focus
  • Two fit options, beanie or relaxed slouch
  • Great stash project with small yardage requirements
  • Video tutorials included

Construction Overview

Broadleaf Slouch is worked in the round from the brim upward.

You begin with brioche for the brim. After the motif is complete, the hat transitions to stockinette for the body and crown shaping. The crown decreases are worked in the round and the hat can be finished with an optional pompom.

Yarn Notes

This hat is designed around holding a soft halo yarn together with a smoother strand. The mohair adds loft and warmth while the fingering or sport weight yarn keeps the brioche stitches defined so the motif reads clearly.

Foreground brioche uses a single strand of fingering or sport weight yarn, while the background and stockinette body are worked with fingering or sport weight yarn held together with lace mohair.

Suri alpaca, brushed alpaca, or similar halo yarns may also be substituted if you prefer.
