Broadleaf is our love letter to big texture. This sweater is designed around a bold brioche motif on the front (and optional back), with the sleeves in stockinette so the fabric can do the talking. You’ll hold one strand of sock yarn with one strand of lace mohair silk to create a cozy, drapey knit with that soft halo we can’t stop chasing.
Broadleaf is worked flat in two pieces and seamed with mattress stitch, with sleeves picked up and knit in the round. The boatneck and dropped shoulders give it an easy, relaxed shape that looks intentional and is easy to wear.
Our samples use Spun Right Round Classic Sock + Mohair Silk for a stained glass effect that’s especially fun in brioche. You can keep it tonal and moody, go wildly variegated, or choose a foreground accent color that really pops.
Design Details
The brioche motif is emphasized by working the foreground brioche color with a single strand of sock yarn, while the background uses sock yarn held together with lace mohair silk. The contrast between halo and non-halo yarns creates depth and a dimensional fabric.
You can knit brioche on both front and back, or work a stockinette back for a lighter feel and a different look.
Construction Overview
Broadleaf is knit using one strand of lace mohair silk held with one strand of sock yarn.
The front and back panels are worked flat. After blocking, they’re seamed at the shoulders and sides using mattress stitch, leaving openings for the arms.
Sleeve stitches are picked up around the armholes and worked in the round in stockinette.
Why You’ll Love It
- Bold brioche texture that feels plush but still drapes
- Two styling options brioche front and back or brioche front with stockinette back
- Relaxed silhouette boatneck and dropped shoulders
- Straightforward finishing seam panels, then pick up sleeves
