This pattern is for chunky “bubble writing” letters which can be propped on a shelf or mantelpiece, or threaded with a ribbon or string to hang them up. A lovely baby gift, wedding sign, home decoration or party banner.

Each letter is composed of an identical front and back, which are then sewn together around the edges and stuffed to form a delightfully squishy, tactile “bubble” letter.

Some letters are simpler than others, but once you get the idea of how the patterns work you can usually get one side knitted during an hour’s TV show!

This pattern comprises all 26 letters of the alphabet plus 3 bonus patterns: ampersand (&), exclamation mark (!) and heart

SPECIFICATIONS:

TO MAKE A STUFFED ORNAMENT
Approximate height: 14cm / 5.25”
Yarn: DK wool (around 16g)
Needles: 2.75mm / US 2 / UK 12
Stuffing: about the same weight of wool stuffing (or around half that for polyester stuffing)
Knit the pattern twice, sew together around the edges and stuff to form a delightfully squishy, tactile three-dimensional letter or symbol. Add a ribbon to make a hanging ornament.

TO MAKE A CUSHION
Approximate height: 34cm / 13.5”
Yarn: Wool and the Gang Heal the Wool or other super-bulky wool (around 250-350g)
Needles: 10.00mm / US 15 / UK 000
Stuffing: around 100-150g wool stuffing (or around half that for polyester stuffing)
Knit and stuff as above

TO MAKE A WASHCLOTH
Approximate height: 19cm / 7.5”
Yarn: Worsted/Aran cotton (around 16g)
Needles: 4.5mm / US 7 / UK 7
Knit 1 in cotton (or linen or hemp) and add a crochet hanging loop.

CUSTOMISE IT:
This is a highly customisable pattern. Make your letter or symbol any size you like, from super-bulky to lace weight yarn. Vary the colours and patterns, use different stitches – the possibilities are endless!

For other yarns, if you are making a stuffed ornament or cushion, I simply suggest that you go down a needle size or two from that recommended for your yarn, to create a nice dense fabric and stop the stuffing showing through.
