A trio of colourful treats! The Building Blocks Scarf has been developed to match the design introduced in my Building Blocks Blanket, and to pair with the Building Blocks Hat.

The hat and scarf would make a perfect set for an excellent gift for any kid (big kids included!). I hope you love it as much as I do!

The important stuff:
The scarf is knitted flat, in one piece and seamed at the end. The colour changes use Intarsia methods. If this is your first foray into colourwork, you may want to consider trying my Building Blocks Washcloth pattern first as a trial run.

Full disclosure: There are ends - lots of ends that have to be woven in or secured. Also you’ll need to find a way of managing multiple colours. I suggest bobbins (details in the pattern). There is some wastage with this method but it avoids tangles.

Sizes available:

  • Small: 13cm x 98cm (5.25 x 38.5in)
  • Large: 13cm x 184cm (5.25 x 72.5in) The width as you are knitting will be double that listed above because the item is folded and seamed at the end.

Materials requried:

  • DK weight yarn in 5 colours. Sample shown used Deramores Studio Anti-Pilling DK 100g/250m (273yds)
  • 4mm (US6) knitting needles (or size needed to obtain gauge)
  • Darning needle
  • (optional) bobbins for measuring out colourwork

General Yarn Requirements (more specific values are given in the pattern):

  • Small: 150m (165yds) in C1, approx. 110m (121yds) in C2, C3, C4 & C5
  • Large: 235m (257yds) in C1, approx. 220m (240yds) in C2, C3, C4 & C5

Techniques required: Intarsia, Seaming

Gauge is listed for blocked stockinette stitch in case you want to try out yarns before purchasing the pattern. On purchase of the pattern it is suggested that you can use the instructions to create one block following the pattern and use that in your calculations for creating bobbins, although a guide amount is given based on my knitting.

One of the people who made the Building Blocks Blanket pattern has added links on their project page for making neater colour changes with intarsia methods. Check out their project page here.
