Add some lacy drama to your wardrobe. Make it for yourself or gift it to a lucky recipient.

The name for this cowl (pelerine?) came about when I took the finished cowl to my knitting night group. One of my friends there said it looked like fish to her. It looks like butterflies to me. I decided to go with the Butterfly Perspective!

Worked from the bottom up in the round, the cowl is a little tricky for the first 30 rounds, then it gets into basic lace knitting. All stitches are explained in the pattern.

The sample was created with a gorgeous custom colorway from Dawn at Ozifarmer’s Market. I recommend contacting her for your yarn.

The pattern is both written and charted. It has been both professionally tech edited by cyndi171 and test knit by some wonderful people. Special thanks to missy42 for all her help with the first run through of the pattern!

Detailed blocking instructions for a lace cowl are given.

Materials:

Yarn: 325 yards (297 meters) DK weight yarn. Sample is shown in Ozifarmer’s Market 8 ply cotton gradient, 130 gram skein. The yardage is an estimate. My sample used 310 yards, but depending on your gauge, you may use more or less yardage. It’s better to err on the side of too much yarn.

Needles: Two circular needles in the size needed to obtain gauge. I used both a 36” and 16” circular 4.5 mm (US7). You will need the larger circular for the cast on. It’s easier to cast on a large number of stitches with a longer needle. It helps you to not twist your yarn. Once you get through a few of the decrease rounds, you will want to switch to a shorter circular.

Notions: at least one stitch marker for marking beginning of round, more if you want to mark the pattern repeats, darning needle for weaving in ends. You will also need wires, matts, and pins for blocking, as well as 2 long knitting needles or dowels. Full blocking instructions are given in the pattern.

Gauge:

21 1/2 stitches and 25 rows = 4” (10 cm) in stockinette knit flat.

Measurements:

Neck opening = 20” (51 cm)
Bottom opening = 52” (132 cm)
