This is a bottom up beanie type hat that starts with a garter brim.
It is then joined to create a small tab where you can sew a button on. There is no actual buttonhole to worry about though, the button is just sewn in place. The rest of the hat is knit in the round with a simple design that continues up through the decreases at the crown. It is finished with Icord or just sewn through the last few sts, whichever you prefer- although I like the way the Icord looks.
There are 3 sizes- newborn to about 6mos, 6-12 mos and toddler.
I had fun adding different buttons and embellishments to these to make them unique. Also, the garter brim can be in a different color than the main part of the hat and the top can be different again.
Many possibilities for this little beanie-holidays, your favorite sports teams, school colors, anything you want the little noggin to sport!
I used DK wt for the smaller sizes and a worsted wt for the toddler size-all I did was follow the smallest size with worsted and larger needles and it is about right for a 1-2 year old. I suppose you could adapt a bit and have it for a larger child also- just start with more sts and knit an extra inch before decreases, but I have not tried this yet.
For the smaller versions, I only needed about 70-75 yds and about 80-85 or so for the larger version.
A note about finishing- I did not actually write this in the pattern but as the photos show, just sew the button in place and then tack down the tab with the tail of yarn. Add an embellishment to the top, weave in your ends and finis!
Thanks to all who gave me a ❤️ and got the pattern for free. Look forward to seeing all your projects.
