Byrdo holds a special place at The Byrd’s Nest. He was the very first bird I designed, and in a shop named for a nest of birds, that makes him a bit of a founding character.

Byrdo is knit in the round from the bottom up on double pointed needles, with the wings, tail, feet, and beak worked separately and added once the body is done.

His legs are worked as i-cords, so his legs can be posed, a small detail that gives him a lot of personality.

He is knit at a firm gauge so the stuffing stays hidden and the finished bird keeps his shape through plenty of handling.

Skill level is intermediate, suited to a knitter comfortable with double pointed needles and small, separately worked pieces.

Designed by Julie Anderson of The Byrd’s Nest, drawing on a Master’s in early childhood special education and more than 17 years of designing toys made to be loved.
