Cancer S* cks

Recently, a close friend of mine told me she had been diagnosed with cancer. Yes, that horrible disease that seems to be everywhere, in every shape and form. I remember being once told that cancer is faceless, I did not understand before how true that saying is. Her announcement profoundly shocked me: it was so unfair. Then again, that how cancer is. Unfair.

Following another friend’s idea, I decided to design the Cancer Socks pattern. Not only to denounce that injustice, but mainly to create something around which people could unite, not despite, but through this disease. As a way to show our support to those who are fighting and to honour those who fought.

I had initially decided to donate all the profits from the sale of this pattern to the Canadian Cancer Society, but a few days before its release, my friend told me that even after her big surgery, she’d have to go through six months of chemotherapy and two years of immunotherapy. To support her in that difficult ordeal, I have decided to give her the profits made during the first month of the Cancer Socks sale hoping this can help her obtain healthcare that’s not covered by the system and that would hopefully make her fight more bearable. After that first month, all the benefits from the sale of this pattern will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.

INFORMATION AND MATERIAL

SIZES
S (56st), M (60st), L (64st)

GAUGE
32 stitches X 40 rows = 10cm/10cm square, stockinette in the round, after blocking.
You must also have the same gauge for the colorwork.

YARNS
“Fingering” size yarn (usually 400m/100g). It is recommended to use yarn that contains nylon, for durability.

• MAIN COLOUR : 130, (140), (160) meters.
• CONTRASTING COLOUR 1 : 125, (135), (150) meters.

NOTIONS

• Needles needed to obtain the gauge, usually 2,5mm to 3mm.
• Tapestry needle
• Stitch markers

INSTRUCTIONS
The pattern is made of written instructions except the colorwork patterns, that are shown on a chart. The instructions are given to knit the socks toes up, but you may also knit them cuff down by simply incorporating the charts in reverse.

TECHNIQUES USED

• Figure 8 cast-on method ;
• German short row heel (Tweedledee Heel) ;
• Knowing how to carry up the yarn in colorwork section.

Chaussettes Cancer S* cks

Récemment, une amie à laquelle je tiens beaucoup m’a appris qu’elle était atteinte du cancer. Oui, cette horrible maladie qui semble être partout et sous toutes les formes. On m’avait déjà dit que le cancer n’avait pas de visage, mais je n’avais pas compris avant cela à quel point c’était vrai. Son annonce m’a profondément choquée : c’était injuste. Et pourtant, c’est ça, le cancer. C’est injuste.

Suite à l’idée d’une autre amie, j’ai donc décidé de concevoir le patron des Cancer Socks, non seulement pour dénoncer cette injustice, mais surtout pour créer quelque chose qui permettrait à tous de s’unir, non pas malgré, mais à travers cette maladie. De montrer notre soutien à ceux qui se battent et d’honorer ceux qui se sont battu.

J’avais initialement décidé de remettre tous les gains générés par la vente de ce patron à la Société Canadienne du Cancer, mais à quelques jours de la sortie dudit patron, cette amie m’a appris que malgré sa grosse opération, elle devra également subir six mois de chimiothérapie et deux ans d’immunothérapie. Afin de la soutenir dans cette épreuve difficile, j’ai décidé de lui remettre les gains obtenus lors du premier mois de la vente des chaussettes Cancer Socks… en espérant que cela lui permettra d’obtenir des soins, non couvert par le système de santé, qui rendront son combat plus supportable… À la suite de quoi, tous les bénéfices générés par la vente du patron seront remis à la Société Canadienne du Cancer.

TAILLES

ÉCHANTILLON
32 mailles X 40 rangs = carré de 10cm/10cm tricoté à l’endroit en rond, après blocage.
Vous devez également obtenir le même échantillon pour votre jacquard.

FILS
Grosseur « fingering » (généralement 400m/100g). Il est suggéré d’utiliser un fil contenant un certain pourcentage de nylon, pour la durabilité.

• COULEUR PRINCIPALE : 130, (140), (160) mètres.
• COULEUR CONTRASTANTE 1 : 125, (135), (150) mètres.

MATÉRIEL

• Aiguilles de taille nécessaire pour obtenir l’échantillon, généralement entre 2.5mm et 3mm
• Aiguille à laine
• Marqueurs de maille

INSTRUCTIONS
Le patron est composé d’instructions écrites, à l’exception des motifs en jacquard, qui sont sous forme de charte.

Les instructions sont données pour tricoter les chaussettes des orteils jusqu’à la cheville, mais vous pouvez évidemment les tricoter en commençant par la cheville, en incorporant les chartes à l’envers.

Les abréviations utilisées sont majoritairement tirées de l’anglais. Un tableau, situé à la seconde page du patron, définit chaque abréviation utilisée ; cela permet non seulement d’alléger les instructions écrites, mais facilitera également la compréhension de votre prochain patron exclusivement en anglais!
