This hat was inspired by the Trinity Alps in Northern California, one of my favorite places in the entire world. The Canyon Creek Trail is particularly beautiful, with rugged peaks jutting upward around the lake. It’s the exact kind of spot you’d need to wear a warm and wooly hat for some outdoor adventures, and the Canyon Creek hat delivers warmth and woolliness in abundance. Perfect for packing!

Knit from the bottom up, Canyon Creek uses a tubular cast on and 1x1 ribbing for the brim. The body of the hat is striped using the helix stripe technique. These one-round stripes are perfectly jogless (save for where you first join the second yarn color), and with only two colors, the striping couldn’t be simpler.

This warm and cozy beanie is enhanced by elegant techniques, yet is simple enough for the experienced beginner. I’ve provided an explanation of all techniques used, making them accessible for all knitters.

Canyon Creek is written for four sizes:

Baby: 15” around, 6” tall
The Baby size hat uses around 70 yards of bulky weight yarn. This size will stretch to fit a head circumference of 15.5–17”.

Child: 17” around, 7“ tall
The Child size hat uses around 140 yards of bulky weight yarn. This size will stretch to fit a head with a circumference of 17.5–19.5”.

Adult S/M: 19.5” around, 8.25“ tall
Sized to fit an average woman’s head, the Adult S/M size hat uses around 195 yards of bulky weight yarn. This size will stretch to fit a head with a circumference of 20–22”.

Adult S/M: 21.5” around, 8.75“ tall
Sized to fit an average woman’s head, the Adult S/M size hat uses around 235 yards of bulky weight yarn. This size will stretch to fit a head with a circumference of 22–23.5”.
