As much as I love all the wonderful creatures inhabiting the worlds’ dry lands, I am even more fascinated by Earths’ magical watery worlds and their colorful inhabitants. Here is a way to dive into the enchanting and spectacularly splashy underwater world, without even getting your feet wet!

The Caribbean Sea runs 1000 km along the coasts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras and is home to about 7000 islands. It also houses the second-largest barrier reef in the world, that constitutes the substratal stomping - eh, swimming - grounds for tons of fabulously flashy fish, among which the three splendid swimmers and one grounded inhabitant in this pattern.

This pattern contains the fairy basslet, bluehead wrasse, queen triggerfish and the red cushion sea star.

Only small amounts of yarns are needed, so a reef fish is a great project to use up any scraps you have lying around.
Together, these fish make a great mock aquarium or a colorful crib mobile. The reef fish and sea star were knitted on 2.00 mm double pointed needles (UK 12, US 0) in double plies of merino, the fins were made on 1.25 mm needles in single plies. All can be done on thicker needles in heavier yarn and will turn out somewhat bulkier.

Each fish is an easy, fast and fun project and can be done in a few hours. These projects ask for knitting flat and in the round, knitting in garter stitch, intarsia knitting and (optionally) picking up stitches.

Enjoy your fin-tastic fish!
