Often when working a cable pattern, I get nervous when my knitting doesn’t yet look like what is shown in the picture – I wait (somewhat impatiently) for that one cable stitch that will surely bring the whole look together. Inevitably this crucial stitch works it magic by changing the direction of the cable movement. This cowl will have you anticipating the next change in direction too.

This cowl uses a reversible slipped stitch line to mimic a cable without the use of cable stitches. The double thick reversible lines imbue the fabric with the squishiness of your cabled knits. The lines travel across the fabric by using simple increases and decreases.

The reversible fabric makes this a carefree accessory to throw on. A shorter cowl, snuggled closely to your neck, shows only a one coloured design; then flip it over for a new look. The longer version displays the reversibility however you wear it.

This pattern is written for two sizes in worsted weight yarn. The circumference and depth are adjustable. This pattern is adaptable to any thickness of yarn.

When stash diving, look for 2 yarns of approximately the same thickness with good contrast. Most smooth yarns will work well.

A slipped stitch reversible line is a simple combination of 2 stitches. Please see the Just Lines e-book to explore different ways that this technique can be used.
