This hat pattern was created to help local sheep farms in Ontario, especially after visiting Topsy Farm in Kingston area in Ontario. If you purchase yarns at Topsy Farm, you can ask for a free pattern download QR code from the farm.

YARN
Fingering weight

Samples Used Topsy Farms Fingering weight (400m/100g)

Dark Brown (MC) 35 g
Natural/Cream (CC1) 18 g
Light brown/Oatmeal (CC2) 30 g
Black/Charcoal (CC3) 8 g

Note on choosing colors: I chose neutral tone on tone to make the entire hat variation of natural colors. However, you can choose 1 MC and 1 CC to make all sheep the same color. e.g. Darker brown with natural/off-white. If you choose to do just white sheep, it is always fun to add just one black sheep (you need to incorporate the INTARSIA technique for this), we all need that troublesome one black sheep in our lives). Non-superwash wool will produce a felted look over time.

NEEDLES
2.5mm, 2.75mm DPN or
2.5mm, 2.75mm circular needles, long enough to do “Magic Loop”

SIZE
ONE SIZE (adult women), bock it to your size.

Tension/Gauge
3x3 rib 32 st x 36 row
Fairisle 28 st x 32 row

The hat is constructed of 28sts repeats pattern block.

You can wear this hat as a slouchy hat with the hem/cuff down to show off Latvian braid detail or as a regular hat with the hem/cuff folded up.
You can also block it with a dinner plate during the blocking stage and wear it as a traditional beret or tam, thus will show off all of your “black sheep”!
