Chunky Tea Cosy
This is made to fit a large teapot – 8 to 10 cups.
Shown in Tivoli Tweed Chunky, shade 794, containing 25% wool. Note that wool will be warmer than a 100% acrylic yarn.
This project is worked in Front Post and Back Post treble crochet. This makes your finished piece thick, cosy and stretchy. It also means that it will keep the tea pot warmer for longer.
Remember that tea stains will be less visible on darker colours.
Washing instructions: handwash in warm water. Do not wring, and lay flat to dry.
Use a 6 mm hook, and chunky yarn. This is smaller than the hook size recommended for chunky yarn, but remember you want to create a thick dense weave to keep your teapot warm. So, this pattern is worked tightly and can be hard on your fingers.
Skill: This is not a pattern for beginners – you will need to be able to do FP and BP crochet, and working in the post and increasing at the same time means that stitches can be difficult to see and count. The top section is worked in FP and BP but the increases will need to be counted carefully as you work.
Once the top is complete, the work is divided into 2 sections (one for each side of the pot), and this section has no increases. These 2 sides are then joined up under the spout and handle.
I have embellished the top of the tea cosy with 3 pompoms.
You will need 2 x 100g balls chunky yarn. Remember that the FP/BP combination uses up a lot of yarn.
