--- No loom is used in this KNITTED plaid cowl. ---

In 1952, Agnes MacDonald published, “Simple Tartan Weaving” in which she presented a method to weave tartans that “looked correct” when woven on a two-harness loom.

In 2013, Franklin Habit published “Stitches in Time.” He describes discovering a knitted-plaid pattern in an old book. From this pattern, he created the “Princess Franklin Plaid Collar”.

This plaid cowl/scarf was created using a variation of Habit’s technique and MacDonald’s Clan MacLeod tartan sett.

A fabric “platform” is knit in horizontal stripes using the garter stitch. Plaid is created by embellishing with vertical stripes woven under and over garter ridges with a tapestry needle. A tartan may be created with repeated horizontal stripes.

This pattern is an excellent stash buster. Three colors of DK weight yarn are used. Although presented in silk, the pattern works for other fibers.

As shown in the pictures, colors are easily changed from the classic black, red, and yellow of the MacLeod tartan.

Many people have questioned the ability to knit plaid that “looks correct”. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at kittybryandesigns@gmail.com.
