This hat is part of a small collection of knits inspired by the women who came before me. My Grandfather’s Mother moved here to this farm over a century ago, when she was a young child. She was a tough, hardy farm wife who lived to the impressive age of 92. Clara May was an essential thread in our family’s woven tapestry here on this farm. These things inspired the design of this hat. Two stitch patterns, a series of knits and purls and alternating rows of cables, mimic woven basket textures. This hat is intended to be worn snugly and keep your head warm during a day’s worth of winter chores. This hat can be knit with a regular brim or a longer brim that can be folded over for extra warmth.
This pattern is perfect for an ambitious beginner. If you’re new to two-stitch cables, don’t be intimidated. I’ve created a video where I show how I work two-stitch cables, quickly and easily, without a cable needle here.

Brim stretches to fit an 18”-22” head.
