Clown Tamer is a slip-stitch colourwork cabled sock pattern, worked from the cuff down, with a standard adjustable heel flap and gusset. It is perfect for taming that ball of crazily variegated yarn (a.k.a. clown barf) in your stash you weren’t sure what to do with.

Clown Tamer comes in 4 sizes: XS (S, M, L) or 66 (70, 74, 78) stitches at cast on, to fit a mid-calf circumference of about 18 (19.5, 21.5, 23.5) cm or 7 (7.75, 8.5, 9.25) inches. In some sections the many cables pull in a lot, so a higher stitch count at cast on, and/or working those sections with a size larger needle is recommended. Circumference of foot is adjustable at gusset, and foot length is customized.

Yarn Requirements:

  • MC: 250-325 yds/229-297m fingering weight sock yarn in a solid color. True solids work best for this type of pattern.
  • CC: 175-200 yds/160-183m fingering weight sock yarn. This yarn should contrast highly with your MC, but it can be solid, semi-solid, striped or variegated.

Thank you to my test knitters for their wonderful input and lovely test socks!
