Make your own yoga strap!

As a yogini and a crafter, I thought there must be a way to create a knit strap. After some experimentation, the pattern below is what I came up with. The total cost of this project is right around $5.00 for the 2 skeins of yarn. Most commercial straps cost around $20.00 or more. As a bonus, you can customize the strap to your liking.

The strap can be used before, during and after your practice. Use the strap as a sling to carry your mat to and from class, and use the strap while stretching in class. This strap is adjustable so you can loop it around itself for a foot or hand-hold. So go on, get strappy!

Materials

  • Size 4 Knitting Needles (I used circulars to knit flat)

  • Measuring tape

  • 2 skeins of worsted (4) cotton yarn: Lily Sugar’n Cream Worsted Weight Yarn in Mod Stripes (120 yards per ball)

  • Yarn Needle

Notes

  • Each row will have a selvage (extra stitch on each side per row): K1, S1 at each end of all rows

  • The selvage and K1, P1 ribbing will keep the strap from curling, and give the strap stretchiness

  • Cotton yarn can be washed and will hold its shape

  • This pattern is knit flat, turn the work on every row

Knitted Measurements

  • 8′ long

  • 2″ wide

Gauge

  • 7 stitches per inch

  • Gauge is not critical to this project

See you on the mat!
