Knit this cowl in soft wool for a classic look. You can easily knit it as a button cowl or a full-length scarf.

This .PDF also includes stitch counts for a slimmer version of the scarf, so you can customize it in a few ways! It also features an optional finishing border that’s not really necessary, but improves the tension of this stockinette-dominated ribbing slightly.

Materials:

  • 325-700yds of heavy sock/fingering yarn; sample shown in O-Wool Classic Two Ply
  • one 16” circular needle in US4/3.5mm, or size needed for gauge, used to work flat
  • one 48” circular needle in size needed for gauge (used to work in the round, optional)
  • tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • 6-7 small buttons, ~⅝“ or sized to suit eyelets

Gauge:
Gauge is 21 sts and 36 rows over 4”/10cm of pattern as written, worked flat and blocked.

Measurements:
As shown, with a one-ridge garter stitch border, this cowl is 12.75(14)“/32(36)cm wide by 26”/66cm long. The sample shown is the wider (70 st) version.

Note: the high-end yarn requirement estimate would be for a scarf worked full-width and more than twice as long as the cowl shown.
