Knit in fine merino wool, this hat combines a neatly cabled brim with a body that works up quickly in the round, creating a look that is as cosy as it is darling.

Although the brim pattern does comprise cables on every right-side row, it’s made up of a low number of stitches and even lower number of rows, so it kind of slides into muscle memory easily enough ― perfect for keeping the hands busy with minimal involvement.

To top off the look, an edging worked in half double crochet enhances the visual braid effect of the cables, while an adjusted series of decrease rounds modulates the look and fit of the pattern, yielding either a tighter or a more relaxed fit.

Materials:

  • 2 skeins 4-ply baby merino wool — here in Phildar Pure Merino 3 in Flanelle
  • 3 mm (US size 2) double-pointed needles, or circular needles for magic loop as preferred
  • 2.5 mm cable needle
  • stitch marker(s)
  • tapestry needle for finishing
  • 2.5 mm (US size 2 I think?) crochet hook for (optional) edge

Techniques:

  • provisional cast-on, and/or cable cast-on;
  • cable knitting;
  • picking up stitches;
  • decreases;
  • mattress stitch or seam-joining.
