Cupples' Amaranth
I slightly altered this 1871 pattern from Mrs. George (Anne Jane) Cupples. I changed the original k2tog and p2tog to SSK and “p2tog tbl” for a better look. I also fixed one small error and renamed Anne Jane’s “Leaf Pattern” to “Cupples’ Amaranth” to make the title less generic. This pattern is from Anne Jane’s stocking knitter’s pamphlet, published in Edinburgh.
There are 12 pattern rows; the 5 of the 6 wrong-side rows are identical. In the first 10 rows, the right-side rows create an extra stitch that’s eliminated in the wrong-side rows. The pattern has a repeat of 12 stitches + 3 edge stitches to balance the strip.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, YO, SSK, p2tog tbl and bind off.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance. My swatch is 3 repeats wide.
