Dana "Generosity"
“Dana” (dah-na) is the ancient Pali word for generosity and is commonly used in the Buddhist tradition as a donation of food or money given to teachers and monks, although it is also used more broadly to mean giving to othes. This pattern was developed for the Flint Handmande group’s “Operation: Warm Up Flint” program that donates handmade cold weather accessories to anyone who might need them in Flint, Michigan.
This is a simple, straightforward pattern worked in the round with only the traditional 2 colors used in any one row, so there are never more than 2 colors to juggle at one time. That said, be warned there are quite a few ends to work in when you are done!
I chose a fair isle pattern for two reasons: First, the stranding makes for a warmer hat, somehting sorely needed for cold winters in Michigan. Secondly, it’s a great way to use up stash yarn. As there are a total of 5 colors in this pattern, only a small amount of each color is needed. I am able to make many hats, even in higher quality yarn, for a smaller cost this way as I am able to use up leftovers from other projects. I suggested some better quality acrylic yarns only because most/many charities require machine wash and dryable yarns, and sometimes hypoalergenic fibers. I’ve also used superwash wools when allergies aren’t a concern.
Please keep in mind this my first fair isle pattern, so please forgive my low-tech chart. In the spirit of dana, it is offered for free, and has not yet been tested, so I welcome any suggestions. Please use for personal and charity use only, in keeping with the spirit of “Dana”. Sales for charity are permitted.
