The Deep Woods Toque was originally published in the Winter 2015 edition of Knitscene magazine and is my favourite pattern that I’ve designed to date. Although the end result is the same, this new version of the pattern has been updated with a few minor changes, such as rewording for clarity, a second larger size, and a new more subdued colour option. Madelinetosh’s Merino Light yarn and Unicorn Tails might seem very fine, however they work up in to a warm and lustrous fabric. You’ll be kept nice and cozy as the stranded colour work acts like a second insulating layer, and the doubled up brim is sure to keep the wind out of your ears.

SIZES
1 (2)

46 (49.5) cm/ 18 (19½)“ circumference unstretched
30.5 (32) cm/ 12 (12½)” tall with brim unfolded

MATERIALS
Recommended Yarn

Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light (Fingering; 100% superwash merino wool; 384 m/ 420 yd/ per 115 g/ 4 oz):
MC: 1 (1) skein in Whiskey Barrel or approx 200 (220) m / 220 (240) yds of a similar fingering weight wool yarn

Madelinetosh Unicorn Tails (Fingering; 100% superwash merino wool; 48 m/ 52 yd per 11 g/ ¼ oz):

CC1: 1* (2) skein(s) in Antler or approx 45 (70) m / 50 (75) yds of a similar fingering weight wool yarn

CC2: 1 skein Glazed Pecan or approx 30 (30) m / 35 (35) yds of a similar fingering weight wool yarn

Size 1 uses almost exactly one entire Unicorn Tail for the CC1 colour when worked at the correct gauge. As a precaution, make sure a second skein is available to you in case you need more!

NOTES
This toque is worked in the round from the bottom up. The chart is worked using the stranded colour work method. To make sure the trees stand out from the background, always carry the CC1 yarn under the MC yarn. Keep floats loose to maintain an elastic fabric. For floats longer than 5 stitches, twist yarns together on wrong side of work. Please check your gauge by knitting a substantial swatch in the charted pattern before beginning, as stranded knitting can work up tighter than you would normally knit.
