This is a fun cowl to knit. There is a lacey stitch on the outer edge of a mitered square and in the opposite corner from the lace is a smaller square in a different color. This is all done in garter stitch, so that both right and wrong sides look very similar. I alternated the squares with the contrasting color with plain squares, but you could put them in every square or make up your own design for placing the contrasting color squares. It is knit flat and then seamed. You could also make this into a longer cowl by making each of the four panel longer. Remember that would take more yarn.
