Diamond and Open Trellis
This knitted lace pattern from an 1884 London journal seemed daunting but wasn’t, once I started working it. There are 16 pattern rows but all the wrong-side rows are “purl across”. A multiple of 14 stitches + 2 selvage stitches are needed. The lace is not visually complicated.
I recommend using a knitting “life line” (a thinner thread or yarn woven through the stitches of a known correct row) or marking every 8th row just in case a mistake happens and you have to ravel back to a known row. Lace knitting patterns are known to be difficult to recover once a mistake happens.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl, YO, k2tog, SSK, k3tog and bind off.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
73 yards of Aunt Lydia’s Classic 10 thread will make 10 inches of a 44-stitch swatch at gauge.
