I saw an image of a gaiter in an 1884 London journal but instructions for the pattern on the calf weren’t included. So here’s my version of one of the gaiter’s stitch patterns. There are 4 pattern rows, 3 of which are knit across or purl across, and there’s a multiple of 3 stitches.
There was a different pattern for the gaiter’s instep that I will post as “Later Gaiter II”.

Skills needed: cast on, knit, purl and bind off.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

57 yards of Wool of the Andes Tweed yarn will make 10 inches of a 33-stitch swatch at gauge.
