We’re searching for warmth here, not water, but the little “y” created by the traveling stitches just brought to mind a divining rod. They stand out sharply against the background of reverse stockinette and are easily executed with twisted stitches. No cable needle required!

Work the slouchy version shown here or do one less pattern repeat and get a snug beanie. Add a fur pom pom for some extra fun.

  • Have some extra yarn? Put a pom pom on top. I made the one shown with novelty eyelash yarn.
  • If you want a closer fitting beanie, knit the pattern twice instead of three times.
  • Stitches: Left twist and right twist stitches or two-stitch cables; knit two together; purl two together
  • The stitch has quite a bit of stretch to it, so these sizes should fit quite a few head sizes.
