Duchess is a cuff-down sock worked in Starling. The snowy owl motif that circles the leg was inspired by a snowy owl who used Washington, D.C.’s Union Station as her nightly hunting ground. My sister and I would grab our binoculars to watch her in action. An unexpected sight in the heart of the city, the owl became the starting point for this design.

TECHNIQUES
These socks are knit cuff-down with three colorwork charts and a forethought heel. The toe is closed using 3-needle bind off.

SIZING
The sock pattern is written for 3 sizes: S (M, L). The socks are designed to fit approximate foot circumference 8” (9”, 10”) or approximately 20 (23, 25 ½) cm. This can vary based on gauge, needle size, and sock fit preference. Please ensure that your chosen size matches with your knitting style materials, and preferred fit. The sample is shown in size S width and a women’s size 6.5 foot length.

GAUGE
In blocked stockinette stitch, 4” x 4” (10cm x 10cm) = 32 sts x 36 rounds
