Dunedrifter Shawl draws inspiration from our beloved Dunedrifter Top. This elongated, asymmetrical triangle combines a striking lace motif with an easy-to-wear shape. The bias drape wraps naturally around the shoulders and layers comfortably, making it a piece you’ll reach for often.

Worked in fingering weight wool, the fabric is lightweight and cozy, and the lace keeps the knitting engaging row by row.

Design Details

The lace motif travels diagonally across the shawl creating movement across the fabric and a more relaxed, modern look. The long asymmetrical shape lets you wear it multiple ways around the neck or shoulders without fussing or constant readjusting.

It’s the kind of piece that works just as well thrown over a sweater as it does wrapped close as a scarf, with the texture doing the work of adding interest to simple outfits.

Pattern Highlights

  • Easy to memorize lace repeat
  • Lightweight shawl that layers comfortably
  • Asymmetrical shape stays put when worn
  • Engaging knitting

Construction Overview

The shawl begins at a single tip and grows outward using increases along one edge and within the lace pattern to create the sweeping bias triangle. As you work, the diagonal lace panel expands across the fabric.

The shaping is gradual and predictable, making it easy to follow while the shawl steadily grows on the needles.

Yarn Notes

We used Union Fibre Merino Singles for our sample. A tonal or solid fingering weight yarn shows the lace most clearly and lets the stitch pattern stand out.

The single ply structure gives the fabric softness and gentle texture while still maintaining definition in the lace.

Fiber: 100% superwash merino
Yardage: 400 yards (366 m) per 100 g skein

Blends containing silk, linen, or yak can also work nicely if you enjoy experimenting with drape.

Needles & Gauge

US 5 (3.75 mm) 20–40” circular needles

We like the drape achieved on US 5 needles and do not find knitting a gauge swatch necessary for this pattern.

Yardage Requirements

790 yards (715 m) fingering weight yarn

Finished Measurements

82” wide (208 cm)
23” deep (58 cm)
