Dunedrifter is a breezy summer top with relaxed shaping and an easy, wearable fit. Rolled-edge sleeves and a softly shaped neckline keep the look casual, while the lace panel adds interest and a summer vibe.

Instead of beginning at the neckline or hem, the sweater starts with the right sleeve and works across the body. The lace grows horizontally as you knit, and the front and back are joined before the left sleeve is completed. The result is a lightweight garment with beautiful movement and drape and a knitting experience that feels refreshingly different from a traditional top down sweater.

Design Details

Dunedrifter has a relaxed silhouette that works naturally with summer layers. The rolled sleeve edges and softly shaped neckline keep the finish casual, while the lace panel adds texture without feeling dressy.

The horizontal lace band draws the eye across the body and pairs easily with high waisted jeans, linen pants, or skirts. It is easy to throw on and head out the door.

Construction Overview

Dunedrifter begins with the right sleeve worked in the round. Stitches are then cast on for the back and the piece is worked flat across the body. The front includes shaping for a smooth neckline created with simple increases and decreases.

The front and back are joined using a three needle bind off and the left sleeve is completed in the round.

Because of the side to side construction, row gauge determines the finished bust width.

Yarn Notes

Our sample was knit in Fru Valborg Silky Yak Singles (65% superwash merino, 20% silk, 15% yak), a blended single ply fingering weight yarn that gives the fabric soft drape and a gentle sheen.

Since Fru Valborg is no longer producing yarn, similar options include Foxy Lady by The Farmer’s Daughter Fibers or Linum Singles by Miss La Motte.

When choosing yarn, look for a blended fingering weight single or soft plied yarn. Fibers with silk, yak, or linen work especially well here and help the fabric hang naturally.

Needles & Gauge

US 4 (3.50 mm) circular needles, 16–40”

24 sts x 32 rows = 4 x 4” in stockinette knit flat and in the round, wet blocked and pinned

Row gauge is especially important in this pattern, as the bust measurement is created by the number of rows worked across the body.

Finished Measurements

Dunedrifter is designed for 2–6” (5–15 cm) of positive ease at the bust.

To choose your size:

1. Measure your full bust
2. Add 2–6”
3. Choose the finished measurement closest to that number

Example: If your bust measures 40”, choose the 45” size for a relaxed fit.
