These tiny hats will make an unforgettable decoration for your Easter celebration as well as a cute Easter gift for your loved ones.

If you don’t celebrate Easter, you can use this pattern to make hats for dolls and small stuffed animals.

It is also a great way to use up leftover yarn and to try a clever way to knit stranded colourwork without floats.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Circumference – 14 cm / 5.5”

Length (without pompom) – 5 cm / 2”

YARN

Any wool, wool blend, cotton, or acrylic yarn that has the equivalent of 150 m / 164 yds in 50 g / 1.7 oz. It is consistent with the DK weight that is marked by the digit “3” on the yarn label.

You will need approximately 7 m / 8 yds of yarn in the main colour (any bright colour) and 3 m / 3.5 yds of yarn in a contrasting colour (white).

To make the hats featured in the photos, I used bits of Knitca Delight yarn (100% extra-fine machine-washable merino wool).

NEEDLES

Double-pointed or circular needles in size 3.25 mm (US size 3).

NOTIONS

1 stitch marker and a wool needle for finishing.

To make a pompom, you will need either a pompom maker or two cardboard circles 3 cm (1.25”) in diameter with an inner hole 1 cm (3/8”) in diameter.

GAUGE

26 stitches and 32 rounds = 4” / 10 cm in stockinette stitch.

NOTES

  • Each hat is worked in the round from the bottom up.
  • Underlined techniques are available as separate tutorials. Click the underlined name of the technique to read and watch the tutorial.
  • As you work in the colour pattern, use the method described in a linked tutorial to avoid floats by trapping the unused strand on the wrong side of the work. This simple trick will ensure the fabric is elastic.
