This scarf is a perfect project for beginners and someone who is looking for a bit of mindless (but not boring!) knitting and purling.

The scarf was designed for practising Eastern knitting. That’s why all tutorials that accompany this pattern and the detailed video knitalong feature this wonderfully efficient knitting style.

But you can make this scarf using any knitting style you like. Simply ignore the video instructions and follow the written pattern. That’s all.

SIZE

Child, Adult, Extra Wide and Long

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

Width – 13, 20, 30 cm / 5, 8, 12”
Length – 120, 140, 180 cm / 47, 55, 70”

See “Variations” section at the bottom of this page for the instructions that explain how to change the size of the scarf and even turn it into a blanket.

YARN

330, 590, 1200 m / 360, 650, 1350 yds of any yarn in DK weight that has the equivalent of 150 m / 164 yds in 50 g / 1.7 oz.

To make the scarf shown in the photo, I used Knitca Delight yarn (100% machine-washable wool) in Dark Goldenrod colour.

NEEDLES

5 mm (US size 8)

NOTIONS

1 wool needle

GAUGE

25 stitches x 31 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4” in pattern stitch (after blocking).

As this project is not fitted, it is not necessary to make a swatch before you start the project.

On the other hand, the swatch will help you get the feel of the texture of the fabric, and see how the colour you picked works with the texture of the scarf. So I encourage you to take a moment and knit a swatch to make sure you like the texture and the colour you’ve chosen.

NOTES

The scarf is worked using the Eastern knitting style, but you can also make it using any other style of knitting. If using a different style, ignore the methods explained in the video tutorials linked to in the pattern.
Underlined techniques are available as separate video tutorials. Click the underlined name of the technique to watch how to use that technique, or click the embedded videos to watch the full knitalong.
