A quick chunky hat with a deep folded brim, worked in the round from the brim up. This one is from my older catalogue, brought back and rewritten in full.

About the pattern
Worked in the round from the brim up, with a deep folded turn-up and a plain body that lets the yarn do the talking. It is fully written, round by round, with a stitch count at every stage, so there is no chart to follow. A quick one: one ball, one evening. Includes the full written pattern, abbreviations and construction notes.

Skill level: Beginner. Comfortable knitting in the round and working a simple decrease. The only fiddly moment is swapping needles as the crown closes, right at the end.

Yarn: One 100 g ball of chunky yarn is enough. The sample is King Cole Timeless Chunky (100 g / 155 m / 164 yds, 90% premium acrylic / 10% alpaca), shade Chandelier (2914), and used approx 77 g / 119 m / 130 yds without a pom pom. Any chunky yarn works. Holding two strands of DK together throughout gives the two-colour effect shown on the cover, though you will need to check your gauge as it will not necessarily match the sample.

Needles: 5 mm (US 8) circular for the brim, 5.5 mm (US 9) circular for the body and crown, plus 5.5 mm (US 9) double-pointed needles or a second short circular for the crown. The sample was worked using magic loop throughout, so the cable length is not critical.

Gauge: 17 sts x 24 rounds = 10 cm / 4 in over stocking stitch on the 5.5 mm needle, worked in the round, unblocked. Gauge is not critical for a hat, but it sets the finished size.

Notions: 1 stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissors. A pom pom for the top if you would like one.

Finished measurements: Circumference 48 cm / 18.90 in unstretched, the rib stretches to fit. Height 21 cm / 8.27 in with the brim folded up. Fits an adult head of 52 to 58 cm / 20.47 to 22.83 in.
