Emae is an island of Vanuatu, a country where the sea is deeply blue! The archipelago suffered a strong cyclone while I was designing this shawl. I decided to add some falling leaves in the middle of the blue water…

Emae starts at the top, in the middle of the neck, with a garter tab cast on. The first section is worked in stockinette, with regular increases to obtain a crescent shape. Then you change for a complementary colour and a section in reverse stockinette on which small leaves are disseminated. Finally a narrow lace edging is made sideways and attached to the main body as the knitting progress. The knitting is easy as long as you manage to do some increases and decreases (and a terrible p2togtbl, not so terrible in fact…!).

Skill level
Advanced Beginner.
Sizes and finished measurements
Emae is offered in two sizes.
Small: Wingspan: approximately 152 cm (57 in). Depth: 36 cm (15 in).
Large: Wingspan: approximately 180 cm (77 in). Depth: 48 cm (19 in). Instructions for the large size are given in brackets.
Materials
Yarn
Any DK weight yarn. In the sample I used Dolce de Luce 30% angora, 70% merino, 50 g (1.76 oz), 150 m (164 yds). Main colour (MC): Lumière slave, 2 (3) skeins. Complementary colour A (CCA): Eclaircie, 1 (2) skein(s). Complementary colour B (CCB): Nude, few yards.
Needle
5 mm (US 8) circular needle 80 cm (31 in). Sharp pointed needle would be preferable.
Notions
Two stitch markers. Tapestry needle. A box of pins to block the shawl.
Gauge
10 cm x 10 cm (4 in x 4 in) = 15 sts and 22 rows with 5 mm (US 8) needle through stockinette, after blocking.

As usual this pattern beneficed a lot from the good advices of talented testers. They also offer pieces with beautiful combination of colors. A huge thank you to all of them!
