When I was first approached about designing a shawl for the Star Trek shipment of the Yarnover Truck’s Super Nerdy Yarn Club, I jumped at the opportunity. My love for Star Trek (particularly TNG) runs deep and I was thrilled to have the excuse to use it as specific inspiration for a new piece. The end result is Engage, an asymmetrical shawl that fellow Star Trek fans will recognize as the shape of the communicator badge worn by those who don a Starfleet uniform. Engage begins at the top point and is shaped by simple increases and decreases as the beautiful Apple Tree Knits Star Trek gradient fades from cream to blue. The combadge shape is surprisingly wearable, with fun options for tying the points.

Specific yarn requirements:
Apple Tree Knits Plush Fingering (100% superwash merino wool; 560 yds/ 512 m per 113g); 1 skein in Star Trek Gradient
Or, 560 yds/ 512 m of a fingering weight yarn

Needles:
US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles, at least 32”/ 80 cm long, or size needed to obtain gauge

Gauge:
19 sts & 38 rows = 4”/ 10 cm in Garter stitch after blocking
Meeting this exact gauge is not crucial, but any major differences will affect the size of the finished shawl as well as yarn requirements.
