This pattern is for the “Introduction to Knitting: Epic Journey Cowl” class taught by Kate Smith at The Craftivist in Atlanta, Georgia.

Make a one-size-fits-all, unisex cowl (or “neck warmer”) in this four-part class. You’ll practice several knitting techniques that are common in other beginner-friendly patterns, as well as more adventurous patterns.

Format
Begin by working flat and use knits and purls to create five sections of textures. Then, seam the cast-on and bind-off edges together, pick up stitches along the edges, and work in the round to create a ribbed border on each side.

The pattern is presented like an epic journey, similar to “The Princess Bride” movie or “Legend of Zelda” video game. Each of the four challenges sync up with our four days of “Introduction to Knitting” classes, and each builds from the one before.

Time Commitment
Plan to knit for 20-40 minutes a day to conquer all challenges within one month. This repetitive practice helps your brain and fingers learn the techniques, and helps you build a daily crafting habit.

Come along and enter the land of Garter Ridge!
