My connection to Erna Jansons began in 2005, shortly after she published her book Latviešu Cimdu Raksti Latvian Mitten Designs. The book contains one hundred mitten designs by this lovely and clever Latvian woman, with her handpainted illustrations of each mitten. The colors and motifs of this pair of mittens are based on Design No. 51.

A knitted lining makes the pair comfortable and wonderfully warm to wear. A picot turning edge defi nes the bottom of the colorwork outer mitten and separates it from the inner hem and lining. In traditional Latvian fashion, the mitten has a peasant thumb, and the pattern continues to the tip of the thumb and the tip of the mitten.
