This summer top is comfortable yet not baggy. It is fitted enough to gently hug your body and loose enough to keep you from feeling hot when the weather gets warmer. The easy to knit stripy pattern decorates the body of the top while also helping to conceal the “worrisome” parts of the waistline (not that any of us needs that, of course :-))

YARN

Any cotton yarn that has the equivalent of 125 m / 136 yds in 50 g / 1.7 oz (it is consistent with DK weight that is marked by digit 3 on the yarn label).

The top is worked in the main colour with thin stripes in a contrasting colour.

You will need around 260, 280, 320, 360, 370 / 590, 630, 660 / 690, 730, 750, 790, 820 / 860, 910, 960, 1000, 1050 m (290, 310, 350, 400, 410 / 650, 690, 720 / 760, 800, 820, 870, 900 / 940, 1000, 1050, 1100, 1150 yds) of yarn in the main colour

and around 25, 30, 30, 40, 40 / 45, 50, 50 / 55, 60, 60, 60, 65 / 70, 70, 75, 80, 85 m (30, 35, 35, 45, 45 / 50, 55, 55 / 60, 65, 65, 65, 70 / 75, 75, 85, 90, 95 yds) of yarn in the contrasting colour.

NEEDLES

5 mm (US size 8) circular needles

Needles that are 60 cm / 24” long work well for making this top in any women’s size.

To make a top in one of the kids’ sizes, work on two circular needles. Alternatively, you can use shorter circular needles or a set of long circular needles and the magic loop technique.

NOTIONS

2 locking stitch markers
1 wool needle
additional 5 mm (US size 8) circular needles
3 mm crochet hook
row counter (optional)

NOTES

  • This top is worked from the bottom up. The body of the top is worked in the round. After we shape the sleeves in step 2, we’ll divide the stitches into two equal groups and finish the top part of the front and the back separately.
  • To make sure the stripes look consistent, we’ll use the raised increase method that creates perfectly jogless stripes.
  • This project is very easy to customize. To make it in one solid or variegated colour, skip step 1.4 of the pattern. To make it shorter or longer, work fewer / more rounds in step 1.4.1. You can also add different “knit and purl” or basic lace stitch patterns to completely change the look and the feel of the fabric. Changing a stitch pattern will affect the size of the tee but with a casual fit like the one this top has, it won’t make a huge difference.

The pattern is supported by step by step photo instructions and nine video tutorials that demonstrate the techniques used to make this tee.
