Your next act of handmade courage:

Well, my friends, the pattern’s come.
Let’s wrap up warm and have some fun.
Throw away the summer sun.
Let your needles knit on! (knit on, knit on, knit on…)

With the Fall Night Long cowl, you’ll feel the rhythm of autumn with every stitch. Don’t be fooled by the fancy dance steps, though—most of the cowl is worked in stockinette. All the magic happens in just three rounds, but you’ll totally look like a superstar for it!

Once you get started, you can’t put it down.

Designed for worsted weight yarn, you’ll quickly knit your troubles away. The leaves highlight the variegation of a beautiful colorway, but a solid or tonal yarn would be stunning, too.

Raise the roof and grab some yarn, because this cowl will keep you cozy all season long.

My apologies to Lionel Richie’s “All Night Long.” You’re welcome for the earworm!

Quick Highlights:

Leaf Motif: Three staggered bands of textured leaves create an eye-catching design using elongated knit stitches.
Easy Rhythm: Most rounds are simple stockinette stitch, with just three leaf rounds creating the decorative motif.
Versatile Fit: Six suggested sizes, from a snug neck warmer to a long cowl that can be doubled for extra warmth.
Customizable Circumference: Easily adjust the circumference in 1.5 in. (3.75 cm) increments to create your ideal fit.
Rolled Edges: Softly rolled edges paired with bands of 1x1 ribbing give the cowl a relaxed, casual look.
Techniques: Knitting in the round, 1x1 ribbing, elongated stitches worked into rounds below, and a stretchy bind-off.
Pattern: Written, round-by-round instructions with checkboxes to track progress, plus a chart for the stitch pattern. Step-by-step reference photos and video tutorials for special techniques.
Yarn Weight: Worsted (CYC #4). Just one skein for smaller sizes!
Construction: Knit in the round from the bottom up, with matching rolled edges and ribbing at the top and bottom.

Measurements:
Finished Circumference:
24 (30, 36, 51, 60, 72) in. {61 (76, 91, 130, 152, 183) cm}
Finished Height: 6.25 in. (16 cm) for all sizes.

Choosing Your Size: The pattern includes guidance for selecting the best circumference based on how you’d like to wear your cowl.
Short Cowl: Approximately 24 in. (61 cm) for a close-fitting neck warmer.
Medium Cowl: Approximately 30–36 in. (76–91 cm) for a relaxed, single-loop style.
Long Cowl: Approximately 51–72 in. (130–183 cm) for a longer loop that can be doubled.

The circumference can be customized in increments of approximately 1.5 in. (3.75 cm).

Gauge:
18 sts and 26 rnds = 4 in. (10.16 cm) in stockinette stitch worked in the round, blocked.
2 repeats wide and 1 leaf tall (12 sts by 9 rnds) = 3 in. wide by 1.25 in. tall (7.5 cm wide by 3 cm tall), blocked, in leaf pattern.
The leaf motif expands the fabric compared to stockinette. Choose the needle size that produces the specified blocked stockinette gauge.

Yarn, Needles, & Notions:
Yarn:
Malabrigo Yarn Rios, 100% Superwash Merino, 210 yd. (192 m)/100 g per skein, or similar worsted-weight yarn (CYC #4).
See table for yarn amounts per size.
Skeins Required: 1 (1, 2, 2, 2, 3) skeins.
Sample shown in Liquidambar, Size 1, used approximately 147 yd. (134 m)/70 g.

Needles:
US 8 (5 mm) circular needles, or size needed to achieve gauge.
Choose a circular needle length shorter than your cowl circumference to avoid stretching the fabric.
US 8 (5 mm) double-pointed needle, or same size as main needles (optional, for bind-off).

Notions:
1 stitch marker
Blunt tapestry needle
US G (4.25 mm) crochet hook (optional, for working elongated stitches)
