I altered the Falling Leaves pattern from Knitting Counterpanes by Mary Walker Phillips by using a central decrease instead of a leaning one and by changing the garter stitch leaves to reverse stockinette. The reverse stockinette makes this afghan strip reversible and requires less vigorous blocking than the garter stitch version. As an experiment, I tried decreasing on the leaves’ outside edges, only to find diamonds instead of leaves. (That central vein is everything for a leaf!)
The pattern is a multiple of 14 stitches + 9 edge stitches. It also has 24 rows but becomes easier to follow visually after several rows are worked.
Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, yarn over, k2tog, SSK (slip-slip-knit2tog), S2KP2 (slip 2 as if to knit-k1-pass 2 slipped stitches over knit stitch) and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread and needle size will work. Make a swatch to check for size and appearance.
24 yards will make one 24-row repeat (2.5”) in the stated gauge with 2 repeats and 9 edge stitches.
