Feather & Fan (also called Old Shale or Old Shell) is one of those classic lace patterns that I love to knit. It’s pretty simple, and creates a lovely result. I did some playing around with a Japanese lace stitch pattern and tweaked them both so that they could work together.
I love how the two lace patterns look combined in low contrast stripes, but the lace is just as compelling in one colour. The fit is generous on this one, but the feel is still feminine.

FeFiFo is knit from the bottom-up. The body is worked in the round until the underarm, then worked flat from the underarm to the shoulders. The collar and sleeve cuffs are picked up from the edges and worked in garter stitch after the shoulders are seamed.
The approach to the drop shoulder shaping is different across the sizes. The purpose is to achieve a uniform appearance in the final garment by having the drop shoulder extend past the shoulder more consistently across the full size range.
- For Sizes XS - 2X, the drop shoulder extends beyond the body width, requiring stitches to be cast on at the underarm to widen the yoke.
- For Sizes 3X, 4X, & 5X, the drop shoulder width is the same as the body width.
