Fiddlehead Fern Fingerless Mitts are one of the featured patterns in the Knit Picks IDP Pattern Showcase for Palette Yarn, December 2023. Fiddlehead Fern Fingerless Mitts are seasonally transitional, leaving knitterly fingers free to work in any temperature. They will also leave non-knitterly fingers open to sip a cozy cup of tea or pick apples on a crisp fall day.

Fiddlehead Fern Fingerless Mitts come in twp options: a very short fingertip mini-rib or a longer, folded-down fingertip cuff. The pattern contains a combination of charted and written instructions, and the mitts are knitted using in-the-round construction using 2-color Fair Isle knitting technique.

Sizes:

S/M to fit 7-8 in/18-20 cm hand circumference.
L/XL to fit 9-10 in/23-25 cm hand circumference.
Fit: Mitts can be worn with up to 1 in/2.5 cm positive ease or with up to 1 in/2.5 cm negative ease.

Finished Dimensions:
S/M 8 in/20 cm finished hand circumference after blocking.
L/XL 9 in/23 cm finished hand circumference after blocking.

Gauge:
8 sts and 10 rows per 1 inch/2.5 cm in blocked color chart pattern knitted using US1.5/2.5mm dpns.

Yarn requirements:
Version A (Mini-rib)
S/M 15g/70yds/64m MC and 6g/28yds/26m CC in fingering weight yarn.
L/XL 19g/88yds/81m MC and 8g/37yds/34m CC in fingering weight yarn.

Version B (Folded Finger Cuff)
S/M: 15g/70yds/64m MC and 12g/56yds/51m CC in fingering weight yarn.
L/XL “19g/88yds/81m MC and 16g/74yds/68m CC in fingering weight yarn.

Suggested Yarn:
Samples were knit using Knit Picks Palette, 50g/231yds/211m and 100% Peruvian Highland Wool, colorways Larch Heather and Sea Grass. One ball each colorway per pair of mitts. Contrasting colors in a similar fingering weight yarn that achieves the same gauge can be substituted. 100% wool yarn is recommended for smoothest fabric after blocking.

Needles:
Set of 5 dpns in two sizes: US1/2.25mm and US1.5/2.5mm or dpns that achieve gauge when combined with chosen yarn. 6-7 in/15-20 cm dpn lengths work best to accommodate stitches. Note: This pattern references working in the round on dpns, but other in-the-round methods can be used. See instructions on stitch markers in boxes on pages 4 and 5.

Notions:
• 1-2 stitch markers.
• Darning needle, scissors, waste yarn.
