Warm, but not too warm, Field Mate is the best kind of toque - a perfect hat for the change of weather in The Yarn Collective Rivoli Sport. There’s a hint of a scouting theme to pick up the collection’s inspiration, Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom and because Kiyomi has always been fascinated by the brims of Wedge Caps, and their construction, this one is worked with short rows, in the round and topped with a pompom.

The Field Mate Toque is worked by first knitting the brim from a provisional cast-on. Brim is worked flat in garter stitch and shaped using short-rows. When brim shaping is complete, a contrasting coloured edging is worked with an applied I-cord bind off. Stitches from the provisional cast-on are placed back on needle, and the body of the hat is worked in the round from there, commencing with a slightly decreased gathered crown.
When working the garter stitch brim, it will be difficult to tell the WS from the RS. A quick way of telling which is the RS, is when the tail of where you joined yarn A is located at the lower right corner of work.
