Meet Fiona the flamingo! She’s ready to show off all her dancing moved in her fancy tutu.

It is amazing what else you can learn whilst knitting; when I was researching flamingoes and I was amazed to learn that their feathers are pink because they are coloured by their diet. Flamingos absorb the colourful pigments from their food, and Fiona here looks like she’s had a lot of bright crustaceans!

Fiona is knitted in stockinette stitch, with a sprinkling of shaping here and there. The lacy tutu is made by tying lengths of pink tulle fabric around a strip of ribbon (so no sewing is required for the tutu).

IN THE PATTERN: The pattern has row numbers for each step so you don’t lose your place, photos, a list of abbreviations and explanation of some techniques, a materials list and recommended yarns. The pattern is 6 pages and written in English.

TECHNIQUES: All pieces are knitted flat (back and forth) on a pair of straight knitting needles. You will need to cast on and off, knit, purl, work increases and decreases, and sew seams.

  • A pair of straight 3.5mm knitting needles (US 4)
  • DK yarn (double knitting or light worsted weight); less than 50g per colour
  • Toy filling
  • Buttons for eyes
  • For the tutu, ribbon and pink tulle polyester fabric
