This knitting pattern is of a colourwork Hat, which is in the design of Fir Trees and is a perfect accompaniment to the cowl in the same design. It is knitted in 4-ply on a circular needle, and then you need to move onto double-pointed needles as the stitches decrease. As you can see from the main photo, I knitted the cowl in 3 different colourways. The coloured rib starts the pattern, which then takes you to the main body of the pattern and finishes by decreasing to shape the crown. (This is done by k2tog) There are 2 clear, colourful charts to show the colourwork pattern.

Measurements Finished size: When laid flat, 20 - 21 cm (8”- 8.5”) in height and 25.5 cm (10”) across the rib.
Circumference: It fits head sizes of 52 cm (20.5”) to 58 cm (23”). You can increase the rib by adding more yarn; there will be enough left over to do this.

Tension
Stocking Stitch: 28 sts x 36 rows – 10cm x 10cm/ 4”x 4 (Fair Isle can vary in tension, so please do a tension square, yes we all hate doing them)

Materials
The hat is knitted in the round with a 60cm 3.25mm circular needle and then 5 x 3.25 mm DPNs.

Suggestions of yarn

Left Hat: Scheepjes Metropolis Lyon & Scheepjes Downtown Leafy Suburb (50g 200m/219 yds)

Middle Hat: Drops Fabel Light Pearl Grey & Drops Fabel Emerald City (50g 205 m/224 yds)

Right Hat: Scheepjes Metropolis Lyon & Scheepjes Downtown Park View (50g 200m/219 yds)

Any leftover yarn would be ideal for putting towards a sock project :) You will need a stitch marker and a sewing-up needle to sew in the few ends.

The pattern can be altered to add height, just by adding extra rounds to the rib if needed.

I provide a quick tutorial on how to do the coloured rib on my blog chasobendesigns.com
