This little neckwarmer is knit flat and finished with no seams!

The welting pattern shows off a tonal or self-striping yarn and has a nice ribbing effect to make it stretchy and flexible and fitted. There are two sizes: the small version has enough depth to pull it up around your face and over your nose for most wearers, while the deeper one will have more coverage but a similar close fit.

This cowl is closely related to the Flat Pack Hat, in that it shares the same welting pattern and has a similar construction, but it’s less complex.

Two sizes fit most! Add pattern repeats for a wider finished piece.

The softer gradient one is the size small in handspun Malabrigo Yarn Nube, and the dark blue is the larger one, knit with Malabrigo Yarn Sock in Cirrus Grey.

Materials:

  • 154-190 yards of fingering-weight yarn; the main sample is knit in Malabrigo Yarn Nube (merino for spinning) spun at about a fingering-weight
  • 1 24”+ circular needle in US3/3.25mm, or size needed for gauge
  • tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • crochet hook, 2.25mm or size suited to yarn

Measurements:
There are two sizes—they’re both the same circumference/flat measurement across, but they have different depths.

8.5(8.5)“/22(22)cm wide, measured flat (double for circumference and assume negative ease)
7(8.5)”/18(22)cm tall

Blocking will cause some size distortion, due to the nature of the welting pattern.

Gauge:
Gauge is 22 sts and 48 rows over 4”/10cm of pattern as written. Please be sure to check your gauge. (This is definitely one of those projects where you’ll be all right if your gauge is a little looser, but absolutely will not get a good result if your gauge is too tight.)
