Knit the Flat Pack Hat! This is a pretty enchanting project: it’s knit flat with no short rows. There is shaping, but it is a little mysterious. You have to trust it a bit. On the up side, once you see it, this is one of those knits where you want to make a bunch of them, and you can definitely use the project in its knitting stages to fascinate others. (I think this will even work on knitters, honestly. I mean, I know how it’s made, and I still find it pretty charming and weird.)

Materials:

  • 130(140, 180) yards of fingering-weight yarn; the main samples in M and L are knit with Malabrigo Yarn Sock in colorway Turner
  • 1 24”+ circular needle in US3/3.25mm, or size needed for gauge
  • tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • crochet hook, 2.25mm or size suited to yarn

Gauge:
Gauge is 22 sts and 24 rows over 4”/10cm of pattern as written. Please be sure to check your gauge.

Measurements:
There are three sizes—s(m, l). Small is a very little baby size, medium should fit average kids, and either medium and large should work for most adults. Keep in mind this is a very stretchy/flexible fit—even the tiny baby hat should stretch to fit comfortably on a 18”/46cm head circumference, for example. That smallest size alone has 4”/10cm of built-in stretch.

6(7.5, 9)“/15(19, 23) cm tall
6.75(8, 9)”/17(20, 23)cm across the lower edge.
