This is the first pattern in what I hope to be the ‘Beauty’ series in memory of my beautiful Beauty who crossed the Rainbow Bridge at nearly 14 years old (she was a Doberman/German Shepherd cross I rescued from the council pound at 3 months old).

About the Pattern

This is an extremely versatile pattern for a rectangular shawl (or even a blanket) that can be made as long or as wide as required by repeating the pattern. I explain how to adjust the widths within the pattern and have included a sample table of stitches needed for example widths.

This pattern is ‘self-bordering’ so doesn’t require an additional border; however, you can always add one if you desire.

The pattern was initially designed using Scheepjes Whirl (a 4ply/fingering yarn), but any yarn can be used with corresponding hook size. I would, however, opt for going for a slightly smaller hook than the yarn recommends, particularly if you’re a loose crocheter, in order to keep the chains neater. A gradient yarn works well with this pattern as it shows off the colour changes beautifully.
As the pattern is repeated, you will probably get to memorise the pattern, or will be able to refer to previous rows, and so is relaxing and enjoyable to make.

This is not a difficult pattern to make and the stitches used are:

American Terms – chain, single crochet and double crochet
British Terms – chain, double crochet and treble crochet

Included in the 16 page pdf, you get the pattern in its simplest form called ‘Just the Pattern’, followed by Pattern Notes and a walk-through tutorial with pictures and comments. Also included are computer drawn pattern charts and lots of photos.

I have written the pattern in both American terms and British terms so please be sure to purchase the correct one.

The first shawl pictured was done using Sheepjes Whirl in Rosewater Cocktail and a 3.25 mm hook. I made it 105 stitches wide and blocked it measures approximately 44 x 219 cm.

The second shawl pictured was done using Sheepjes Whirl in Sherbert Rainbow. This one I made 133 stitches wide and blocked it measures approximately 52 x 169 cm.

I hope you enjoy making it and look forward to seeing your pictures; please use #flowersforbeauty if posting on social media.
